Research Center – MAMBO

The Research Center of the Bogota Museum of Modern Art – MAMBO is conceived as a platform that promotes research practices around art, emphasizing the collection, archive, and exhibition program of MAMBO. This initiative highlights the relationship between museums and research, promoting innovative approaches in knowledge creation within the museum context. Through interdisciplinary collaborations and the use of innovative methodologies such as arts-based research, the Research Center aims to foster collaboration, co-creation, and research.

The following open calls are supported by the alliance with researcher Susana Vargas Mejia and the New Frontiers in Research Fund from the Government of Canada. With national and international open calls, and partnerships with universities, the Center will be a dedicated platform for artists, museum professionals, academics, students, and independent investigators to explore art and its role in society and actively participate in the creation of knowledge around the museum’s collection, archive, and exhibition program.

Under this agreement, the Research Center will focus on three main areas:

  • Research on the collection, photographic archive, and exhibitions developed by the museum.
  • Residencies and fellowships for thinkers and researchers from various disciplines to interact with the Bogota Museum of Modern Art as a center for research, co-creation, and dialogue.
  • Knowledge and co-creation spaces with academic activities such as research workshops in collaboration with universities, aimed at promoting knowledge and developing research in a practical and real-world environment.

MAMBO Residencies Program 2024

The research project Digital Futures in Museum Practices* and the Bogota Museum of Modern Art are pleased to present the inaugural edition of the MAMBO Research Center residencies.

The MAMBO residencies program forms the foundation upon which the MAMBO Research Center is established, focusing on the intersection of digital tools and artistic and investigative practices in museums. Through these open calls to both national and international audiences, we aim to expand the reach of the MAMBO Collection and improve its accessibility, with the purpose of enriching perspectives that contribute to the museum’s knowledge construction.

Residencies at MAMBO provide emerging thinkers and researchers from diverse disciplines the opportunity to interact with the Bogota Museum of Modern Art, fostering research, dialogue and co-creation.

  • Each residency will last 2 months, from August to October 2024, during which the research-creation project will be carried out.
  • Participants will receive a stipend of 3,000,000 COP/1,000 CAD for their research-creation, supported by the New Frontiers in Research Fund of the Government of Canada
  • The residencies will focus on utilizing the MAMBO collection, archive and/or exhibition program as the primary resource for research.
  • This year, the following residencies will be offered: Digital, Research, Curatorial, and Conservation in New Media.
  • From July 8 to 19, 2024, the call was open. A total of 183 applications and proposals were received from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Spain, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Uruguay, and Venezuela, submitted by undergraduate and graduate students, artists, art historians, writers, designers, audiovisual producers, journalists, social communicators, anthropologists, philosophers, educators, curators, architects, musicians, sociologists, political scientists, art educators, archaeologists, conservators, and cultural managers.
